History of Budva

There is a lot of evidence that the first settlements on the site of Budva were in the 5th century BC. According to legend, the city was founded by Cadmus of Phoenicia, who, after being expelled from Greece, settled on the territory of modern Budva with his wife Harmony.

As a result, many traces of the Greek and Roman civilizations have been left here. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the border between the two new powers passed through Budva, which had a huge impact on its culture.

In the Middle Age, Budva was ruled by the kings of Dukley, and from 1420 to 1797 the city was ruled by the Venetians. After the Napoleonic Wars, Budva was under the rule of the Austrian Empire, and after the First World War – it was part of Yugoslavia.

Now, Budva is a city of independent Montenegro.

In 1979, there was a strong earthquake that destroyed most of the city, but all the historical buildings have been restored.

Budva is the center of the municipal district of the same name, which includes Becici, Petrovac, Sveti Stefan and Rafailovici.

There are many beaches in Budva, with coarse sand or small pebbles. City beaches:

  • Mogren – located 500 meters from the Old Town, the most famous and picturesque beach.
  • Pisan
  • Slovenian (Slovenska) beach is the longest beach in Budva east of the old town.

  • Jaz – the most beautiful sandy beach in Montenegro.
  • Trsteno – a small sandy beach for families with children, the first 50 meters are shallow, and then the depth begins.
